In her book "The Art of Asking: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help" Amanda Palmer writes:
It's hard enough to give fearlessly, and it's even harder to receive fearlessly.
But within that exchange lies the hardest thing of all:
To ask. Without shame.
And to accept the help that people offer.
Not to force them.
Just to let them.
Asking for help with shame says:
You have the power over me.
Asking with condescension says:
I have the power over you.
But asking for help with gratitude says:
We have the power to help each other.
We think this is good advice. The modeling, photography, artwork, writing, and performance that people create is labor. Yes, it's fun, but it's also hard work. We live in an age where people can come together to support one another. There is nothing wrong with asking your fans, friends and family to support you in doing what you love. It creates community, forges friendships, and makes more beautiful things appear in the world.
So with that, here are some tips for how to ask for help from your community:
- Once you set up monthly support, share your profile (https://www.zivity.com/users/YOURUSERNAME) all over the web. Post it to Twitter, Facebook, make it your Instagram URL, etc.
- Send personal emails. Studies show that this is often the best way to reach people and get them to support you. However, don't spam.
- Keep promoting your profile, week after week, on your social media pages. You can run special promotions, or update folks on your new goals. For example: "All new backers who pledge to support me this week will receive a special bonus photo set!"
Once you get backers, you want to engage them. See: How Do I Interact With My Monthly Backers?
